Working Memory Assessment

Evaluate your working memory capacity through digit span and spatial span tasks with progressive difficulty

What is Working Memory?

Working memory is your brain's ability to temporarily hold and manipulate information needed for complex cognitive tasks. It's like your mental workspace where you actively process information while performing activities like reasoning, comprehension, and learning.

Forward Digit Span

Test basic storage capacity by recalling number sequences in the correct order

Backward Digit Span

Test manipulation ability by recalling number sequences in reverse order

Spatial Span

Test visuospatial working memory using sequences of highlighted grid positions

Benefits of Working Memory Training

Cognitive Benefits

  • Enhanced Focus: Improves sustained attention and concentration abilities
  • Better Problem Solving: Strengthens logical reasoning and analytical thinking
  • Improved Learning: Enhances ability to acquire and retain new information
  • Executive Control: Develops better cognitive flexibility and inhibition

Real-World Applications

  • Academic Performance: Better reading comprehension and mathematical problem solving
  • Professional Skills: Enhanced multitasking and decision-making abilities
  • Daily Tasks: Improved ability to follow complex instructions and remember details
  • Mental Health: Reduced cognitive load and better stress management

Assessment Components

Forward Digit Span

Numbers appear on screen one at a time. You must recall them in the exact same order they appeared. This tests your basic storage capacity and attention span.

Example: See sequence "7 → 2 → 8 → 5" → Type "7285"

Backward Digit Span

Numbers appear sequentially, but you must recall them in reverse order. This tests your ability to manipulate information in working memory, not just store it.

Example: See sequence "4 → 1 → 9 → 3" → Type "3914"

Spatial Span

Grid squares light up one at a time in a sequence. You must click the squares in the same order they appeared. This tests your visuospatial working memory.

Example: See positions flash in sequence → Click them back in same order

Scientific Foundation

Baddeley's Model

Based on Alan Baddeley's influential model of working memory, which identifies three key components: the central executive, phonological loop, and visuospatial sketchpad.

  • Central Executive: Controls attention and coordinates information
  • Phonological Loop: Processes verbal and acoustic information
  • Visuospatial Sketchpad: Handles visual and spatial data

Clinical Applications

Digit span tests are widely used in neuropsychological assessments and are included in major intelligence scales like the WAIS and WISC.

  • • Standard assessment in cognitive evaluations
  • • Predictor of academic achievement
  • • Indicator of executive function development
  • • Used in ADHD and learning disability diagnosis
